Mammuthus primigenius:
The mammoth teeth are among the most popular ones include all kinds of ancient elephant teeth.
The tooth enamel - the hardest material in the body - forms a complex groove lines, stretched between them, elongated bone-like dentin-islands lie.
The enamel wears down more slowly than the dentin, thus continuing series of raised areas formed rasp-like surface is created.
As a result, when the upper and lower teeth were touched, they were able to grind even the most abrasive of plant materials.
The European and American mammoth fossils prove this nature of the progressive evolution, and this development reached, with the wooly mammoth teeth, the top.
The biggest teeth had no less than 30 parallel grooves. The woolly mammoth is one of the best known among all fossil mammals.
Mammoth adapted to the cold ice age climate with stocky body, small ears and warm fur, thus reduced heat loss and the risk of frost damage.
They appeared approximately 7-8 hundred thousand years ago in Eastern Siberia, and the last of them extinct approx. 3,700 years in Vrangel-Islands.
