10 million year old Homotherium? (Machariodus) skull on rock
Partial skull of a Miocene-aged (about 10 million years old) Homotherium or Machariodus (sword-toothed tiger). The tiger skull was put up for sale in 2019 at the Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines fossil fair with the liquidation of an old collection. Similar specimens are known from the Gansu area of China. The dimensions of the skull are approx .: length 237 mm, height 155 mm, width 123 mm. The length of the canine protruding from the skull bone is 92 mm. The fossil weighs about 2384 grams + packaging. Pieces of different bones can also be seen in the bedrock that contains the skull. both canines were broken into several pieces but were glued together. Minor deficiencies are filled. Both the canines and the chewing teeth have a nice sawtooth cutting edge typical of Homotherium. One of the incisors is missing, the other teeth have been glued back to their original position.
