insect and spider fossil copal from Madagascar
Copal from Madagascar containing at least 25 insects and two spiders. The copal was most likely formed from the resin of a tree called Hymenaea verrucosa. The age of copals from Madagascar could only be accurately identified by carbon isotope analysis. The copals studied so far have been found to be between a few hundred years and 1 million years old. This polished surface cop has dimensions of approximately 174 mm in length, 38 mm in maximum width and 18 mm in maximum thickness. It weighs about 47 grams. The copal has an unpolished breaking surface.
