Miocene Hymenoptera wing fossil from Hungary
Pair of Miocene (approx. 10 - 13 million years old) Hymenoptera insect wing impressions. The insect fossil was found near the surface during diatom (diatomaceous earth) mining in the Zemplén Mountains in Hungary near the Erdőbénye settlement. The dimensions of the stones containing the insect wings are approx.: (A): 150 mm x 126 mm x 21.8 mm. Weight approx.: 353 grams + packaging. (B): 73 mm x 50.3 mm x 7 mm. Weight approx.: 23 grams + packaging. The larger stone also shows partial impressions of two types of plants.
